Using time and expertise
High-engagement models for philanthropy have also underscored another important resource that funders are increasingly bringing to bear on their charitable efforts: their time and expertise. Organizations such as VolunteerMatch, Hands On Network (formerly CityCares), and Idealist help donors and other individuals contribute their knowledge, skills, and experiences to assist nonprofit organizations

Volunteermatch uses the Internet to help individuals and businesses to connect with volunteer opportunities in their communities.

Hands On Network is the new name for CityCares, an alliance of 35 locally based, volunteer organizations that work to mobilize civic participation and manage volunteer opportunities in communities throughout the U.S. and internationally.

Idealist was launched in 1996 by the organization Action Without Borders as an international online forum for helping people match their civic interests with volunteer and work opportunities provided by nonprofits.
