Becoming more focused and persistent
Another mechanism that emphasizes the alignment of interests between the funder and recipient is the approach of becoming more focused and persistent by creating a lasting and collaborative relationship between a donor or collection of donors and an organization or group of organizations devoted to a shared set of goals and objectives.

This approach is exemplified by the collaborative working relationships established by conservative foundations and their grantees during the late twentieth century in the interests of developing and promoting a conservative political ideology. The effectiveness of this coordination was recently documented in a critical 2004 report by the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy entitled, “Axis of Ideology: Conservative Foundations and Public Policy."

Another example is the work of the Keep Antibiotics Working Coalition, a coordinated effort of eight funders and more than a dozen nonprofits. This collaboration addresses the public health crisis caused by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics: the accelerating proliferation of resistant bacteria and demise of antibiotics as effective treatments. The Keep Antibiotics Working Coalition was also featured in a GBN-produced story developed by Andy Goodman.
